Chinese Academy of Sciences unveils AI integration plan for nuclear energy at WAIC The 'AI for ADANES' roadmap signals China's ambition to merge artificial intelligence with next-generation nuclear power, with implications for the energy-hungry AI and crypto mining sectors Share Add us on Google by Editorial Team Jul. 25, 2026 China just dropped one of the more ambitious energy blueprints of the year, and it has nothing to do with solar panels or wind farms. At the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) revealed a technical roadmap for weaving artificial intelligence into every stage of the nuclear energy lifecycle.
The plan centers on something called ADANES, short for Accelerator-Driven Advanced Nuclear Energy System. In English: a subcritical nuclear setup that handles fuel breeding, spent-fuel transmutation, and power generation, all enhanced by AI across five architectural layers. The forum itself was a first, marking the inaugural WAIC session dedicated entirely to the AI-nuclear intersection.
Advertisement What ADANES actually is ADANES isn’t a brand-new concept. CAS has been developing accelerator-driven subcritical systems since the 2010s, building on global research into these technologies that dates back to the 1990s. The core idea is to create a nuclear energy system that can more efficiently manage fuel cycles and reduce long-lived radioactive waste, two of the biggest headaches in conventional nuclear power.
The AI roadmap announced at WAIC layers intelligence on top of this foundation through what CAS calls a “triple-driving” model. It combines raw data processing, physics-based modeling, and expert knowledge across five distinct layers of the system architecture. A major national science and technology infrastructure project called CiADS is currently under construction to serve as the verification platform for these technologies.
To back the initiative, CAS also announced the formation of the AI for ADANES Alliance, a coalition that pulls together research institutes, nuclear enterprises, AI companies, and financial institutions. Why this matters for energy markets and AI infrastructure The strategic cooperation between CAS and China General Nuclear (CGN), formalized as far back as March 2016, suggests this has been a long time coming. A decade of groundwork is now producing something concrete enough to present on a global stage.
