The reshuffle could mark a major overhaul of ministers and is aimed at refreshing her Cabinet's image in the face of falling support rates in recent opinion polls.

A lawmaker from the ruling coalition's junior partner, the Japan Innovation Party, is likely to take a ministerial position in the new Cabinet. Currently JIP member Takashi Endo is serving as a special adviser to the prime minister in her Cabinet. The two parties reached a coalition deal in October last year, paving the way for Takaichi to take power.

The prime minister's commitment to upholding the deal led to deadlock in the parliamentary session, as the opposition camp pushed back on bills sought by the JIP. Whether Takaichi will retain her rivals from last year's LDP leadership race, such as Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, will also be closely watched. © KYODO ©2026 GPlusMedia Inc.
