Kerala High Court judges inspect Thrissur mental health centre, reviews facilities
Officials say the inspection was part of the court’s broader exercise of visiting government mental health institutions across the State in connection with cases dealing with their infrastructure and standards of care
Justice Devan Ramachandran and Justice Basant Balaji of the Kerala High Court on Sunday (July 26, 2026) inspected the Government Mental Health Centre, Thrissur, as part of the court’s ongoing scrutiny of mental health-care institutions in the State.The judges inspected different sections of the centre, reviewed the available facilities, and held discussions with officials on the institution’s functioning.The judges were accompanied by the amicus curiae appointed by the High Court in a case concerning the condition and infrastructure of the mental health centre, according to officials.
‘Requires improvement’After the visit, Justice Ramachandran told mediapersons that the institution required considerable improvement.“We will see when the case comes up for consideration. Let the orders come.
A lot of things have to be done. Let us see what happens,” he said.Officials said the inspection was part of the High Court’s broader exercise of visiting government mental health institutions across Kerala in connection with cases dealing with their infrastructure and standards of care.
Earlier, the judges had visited the Government Mental Health Centre, Peroorkada in Thiruvananthapuram. Following that inspection, the High Court voiced concern over the condition of the hospital and stressed the need for urgent measures to upgrade its facilities.
