Nvidia, Microsoft lead 25-company coalition defending open-source AI models in letter to US policymakers Jensen Huang's first-ever post on X was a plea to keep AI open, and the crypto industry should be paying close attention Share Add us on Google by Editorial Team Jul. 24, 2026 A coalition of 25 tech companies, headlined by Nvidia, Microsoft, and Meta, published a joint letter on July 24 urging US policymakers not to impose premature restrictions on open-weight AI models. The letter argues that keeping AI models open is essential for national security, economic competitiveness, and innovation, a position that carries significant downstream implications for the decentralized tech stack that underpins much of the crypto industry.
Jensen Huang, Nvidia’s CEO, chose this letter as the occasion for his very first post on X. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also backed the effort. What the letter actually says The core argument is straightforward: open-weight AI models are safer, not more dangerous, than their closed counterparts.
The letter contends that transparency enables community scrutiny, which prevents single points of failure. When thousands of researchers can audit a model’s weights and behavior, vulnerabilities get spotted faster than when a single company guards everything behind proprietary walls. Huang drew a direct parallel to the open-source software movement of the 1980s.
Back then, critics warned that making code freely available would create security nightmares. Instead, open-source software became the backbone of the internet. Advertisement The 25 signatories include IBM, Palantir, Hugging Face, and a broad cross-section of companies that range from defense contractors to AI research labs.
One notable absence: OpenAI. The company that literally has “open” in its name was not among the signatories. The regulatory backdrop The letter didn’t arrive in a vacuum.
US policymakers have been increasingly scrutinizing foreign open-weight AI models, particularly after the emergence of high-capability systems like Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3. Some proposals have gone as far as suggesting mandatory “kill switch” technologies that would allow authorities to disable AI models remotely if they were deemed a national security threat. The coalition’s position is that these proposals would handicap American AI development without meaningfully reducing risk.
If the US restricts open models while China and other nations continue releasing them freely, the argument goes, American researchers and companies would simply fall behind. This aligns with a broader initiative launched by the Linux Foundation in June 2026, which focused on safeguarding open-source ecosystems against AI-related threats. The foundation’s effort emphasized that open models can be both auditable and secure, a framing that the joint letter explicitly echoes.
Why crypto investors should care Open-weight AI models are already being integrated into decentralized applications, from on-chain analytics tools to autonomous trading agents. If US regulators were to impose strict controls on open-weight AI models, it would directly affect the ability of crypto projects to incorporate AI capabilities. Kill switch requirements, for instance, would be fundamentally incompatible with the permissionless architecture that defines most blockchain applications.
You cannot build a censorship-resistant protocol on top of an AI model that a government agency can remotely disable. Nvidia’s support for open models is significant because the company effectively controls the GPU supply chain that powers both AI training and crypto mining. Microsoft is the largest investor in OpenAI but is simultaneously backing a letter that undermines OpenAI’s closed-model strategy.
